Five Friday Favourites

I’m up to my eyes in line edits for Quarter Square and loving every moment of it. Talked with my editor Kym Hinton on Skype last night. She’s as delightful on the phone as she is in email, and I’m a lucky man to have her helping me whip, beat, smooth and polish this novel.

So with a hey ho, hey ho, it’s off to the nose/grindstone interface I go, but before I dive back in here are today’s FFF.

  1. Routine: At least two hours a day at the local university cafeteria writing – Mon to Thur – if I can't do it, I get very cranky.

Nobel Prize winner in Literature: No idea. I don't pay any attention to the Nobel Prizes.

Sex scene on film: Rupert Graves and James Wilby in Maurice. Nothing happens, but it was the first time I saw two adult men in love on film and it inspired me for the rest of my life.

Online shop: the Kindle shop. I'm addicted.

Guinness ad: No idea. I don't think I've ever seen one.

  2. Routine: Breakfast is just about my only thing with a “routine” to it: Put water in kettle, put kettle on to boil. Place mug on placemat's lower left corner, juice glass at upper right corner. Put sugar in mug, open teabag package and have teabag ready. Pour in boiling water, stir sugar until it dissolves, place teabag in to steep. Check email. Come back to kitchen, add milk to tea, pour glass of juice and sort out morning breakfast biscuits (four or five, Gran Cereale Rosso. Full of fiber and yummmmmmy). Eat and drink while reading something. When finished, clean mug and glass and get back to office to write. Hopefully.

Nobel Prize winner in Literature: I can't argue with your choice, David. Marquez for me, too.

Sex scene on film: I honestly can't think of any this afternoon. Hard to believe – I'm just not thinking cinematically right now.

Online shop: The dreaded Amazon. I so rarely shop online, but the UK Amazon ships reasonably cheaply. Although Book Depository has lovely offerings too, now.

Guinness ad: Couldn't recall one of these to save my life. Sorry!

  3. Ooh yes to the Book Depository! The free delivery to Germany is a huge bonus.

  4. @Alex – That's an excellent writing routine. I bet you're very productive in those times.

@Kimberly – The Book Depository does free delivery worldwide, you know.

@Charlotte – And their customer service is excellent.
